Find Some Balance this Autumn Equinox

A look at how to find some balance in your life in a time of change and equality.

Welcome, Autumn!

Today we celebrate the September Equinox, also commonly known as Mabon or Harvest Home. It is a time when day and night are equal lengths, and it marks the official start of Autumn.

The Autumn Equinox is a time of ritual celebration in many cultures all over the world. At this time, the sun enters the sign of Libra, represented by the scales of balance. Now is the time to focus on balance and what this means to you and your life. Our lives are full of many different responsibilities, and sometimes it can be hard to juggle all of the things you have to do in a day. Between work, taking care of our family, seeing our friends, sometimes we forget the most important thing in our lives: ourselves.

Before we can take care of all of the other things in our lives, we first have to make sure that we take care of ourselves. Around this time, there is a feeling of high energy, and this can make people feel agitated, distracted, and off balance. There are a few simple ways to fix this, and bring balance and a sense of peace back into your life.

Slow down

Take some time to consider how you spend your time from day to day. Are you constantly in a rush, from getting out of the door to work in the morning, to rushing home and wolfing down something quick to eat before rushing off to whatever you need to do that evening? It's time to slow down, and take a breather. When you're constantly rushing, there's no time to properly take care of you and your needs, and you will most likely end up stressed due to having no time to relax.

The key is to prepare. Try waking up just half an hour earlier in the morning, and giving yourself the time to get ready slowly, and enjoy a healthy breakfast at your leisure. Starting your day off in a relaxed way will have a big impact on the rest of your day; it will help you feel calmer, and more prepared for whatever you face.

Take advantage of your lunch hour. Many of us get into the habit of working through our lunch, but not taking a break during the day is believed to actually have a negative impact on productivity. So take some time to sit down and eat, and then do something relaxing that you can enjoy; take a walk, or read a book. Take your mind off work for just a little while, and give your batteries time to recharge, and you will find yourself better able to focus on whatever you need to do in the afternoon.

Take some me time

Constantly rushing round dealing with our day to day responsibilites, we often forget to spend time by ourselves doing things we enjoy. Take a couple of hours during the week to focus on you, and treat yourself to something you enjoy. It could be something as simple as taking the time to cook your favourite meal, sitting down to watch your favourite TV show or read your favourite book, or taking part in an exercise class.

An excellent way to regain balance in your life, and get in some precious you time, is to meditate. Find a quiet space in your home and spend some time just sitting in silence, with your eyes closed, and focus on your breathing. You can use meditation as an opportunity to contemplate and reflect on life, or perhaps you prefer to not think about anything at all. But spending even just ten minutes a day being silent will help you feel so much more relaxed in the longrun.

Spend quality time with loved ones

As well as ourselves, sometimes we can forget to cherish those we love. Work can take up a lot of our time, and by the time we've finished, we're tired and just want to go home and do nothing. We can take advantage of those we love and love us, knowing that they will always be there, and so forget to spend time with them, or tell them how we feel. Remember that we work to support ourselves, and that our lives outside of the office are just, if not more important. It's essential to get a good work/life balance.

Surprise your partner with a spontaneous date, or go on a random family day out somewhere fun. Visit your relatives, or call a friend you haven't spoken to in a while, and have a catch up. Taking some time to remind your loved ones that you haven't forgotten them, and telling them how much they mean to you, will make both them and you feel much closer.
