7 Reasons Why Singles Have all the Fun

Being single is great! Don't believe it? Well, that's not surprising because popular culture - books, films, social media and songs - all rush to portray loved-up coupledom as the ideal goal in life. Everyone must be desperately seeking Mr or Miss Right because you can't really be happy or fulfilled unless you are in a relationship. Wrong! This couldn't be further from the truth! Today, more and more high-achieving people are creating their own happiness by choosing to remain single and happy. Here's why deciding to be single might be the best thing you've ever done.

1) Creating your own happiness

If you're single, it's up to you to make yourself happy. This is good because it means you'll have to focus on yourself. Without being able to hide behind a partner's likes and dislikes, you'll discover what truly makes you tick. Being single forces you to be active rather than passive. Try new ideas to discover what makes your happiness metre rise. Perhaps you want to hike through Peru, or try skydiving. Have a go. There's nobody stopping you!

2) Your rules

In your free time: it's your rules, your way. No more pretending to love the latest health food when you'd really prefer a curry. In a relationship, it's part of the deal that you sometimes have to put your partner's wishes ahead of your own. Being single means you can have your own way all the time. So be selfish but do it constructively. Choose activities that you want to try but that will help you gain knowledge and experience. This means you can choose to live in the up-and-coming area of town that a more sensitive partner might want to avoid, or you can jet off on an adventure holiday at a moment's notice without having to ask first.

3) Career first

One of the biggest bugbears in relationships is when one partner spends too much time at the office, or out on the town with work colleagues. Well, this doesn't apply to you! Single people are more likely to be successful in their career because they can devote the extra time to work projects without getting into trouble at home. Then you can celebrate with colleagues afterwards without having to rush home, too. You won't feel guilty about jetting off on overseas work trips either - just enjoy the ride.

4) Social Bliss

You'll never have to spend time with a bossy, judgemental mother-in-law, or put up with your partner's rude, annoying school friend just to keep the peace. As a singleton, you can choose to surround yourself with supportive people who make you happy. You can decide which social functions to attend and decline those you don't fancy without World War Three breaking out at home.

5) Confidence boost

Being single means you can't hide at home in cosy couple-dom. If you want to meet new people and socialise, you'll have to get out there yourself. Just do it! This teaches self reliance and will build your confidence. A confident, happy singleton is infinitely more attractive than a needy couple.

6) Who are you?

As a single person, you have the chance to focus on skills and talents and to grow and develop them. Couple often run the risk of allowing their personalities to merge - boring! Whereas you have the emotional space to be unique. Identify your strengths and weaknesses - build on the former and work on changing the latter.

7) Sexy singles

Of course one of the benefits of singledom is that if you find someone attractive and if they reciprocate - you can go for it. No strings attached. You can choose intimacy when you want it - not because you are duty-bound to fulfil a partner's expectations.
